The Caryatides

The Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle, South London is shortly to be demolished along with the infamous (once pink, now red) shopping centre. Once acclaimed as visionary in design, the estate is now run down and its poor construction is revealing itself. However, many long term residents suspect the development is more about the interests of local politicians and developers than the local community. Here an estate resident talks about two statues on the estate (once entrance pieces to Rotherhithe Town Hall) and her view of the development.

Multimedia

The documentary and editorial photography market faces enormous challenges in the digital age. The traditional newspaper supplement and magazine market continually erodes as the public looks increasingly to the web for its news and the newspapers counter by focusing on 'lifestyle' features.

The uncertainty the world faces at present combined with the increasing reluctance of citizens of western democracies to accept at face value what their governments tell them means that an audience is still there. The challenge for photographers is to find new ways of accessing it, for example using multimedia.
